Porsche Cayman S chasing a Boxster Spyder at Thunderhill West
Made it back out to Thunderhill West for the first time in nearly a year. Had a fun session following my buddy in his Spyder, along with my PB for the day, a 1:22.3. Apologies for the lack of overlays this time, datalogging wasn't working and I was too lazy to fix it. Audio is straight from the GoPro, too, so there's some wind noise.

Laguna Seca - 2009 Porsche Cayman S - 1:37.2

My website - www.SierraRacingSupply.com IG - peter_sierraracing A bit late on posting this one! Had a nice day out at Laguna with Turn8 in October and managed to string together some 1:37's just before disintegrating my front brake pads (oops). Peter, how come you changed from Top gear catback back to the stock muffler?

    • @PeterSierraRacingSupply
      @PeterSierraRacingSupply 5 месяцев назад

      Track sound restrictions are the only reason, and I miss that exhaust every time I hop in my car. Even out at Thunderhill I was getting flagged. The combo with the race headers sounds amazing (constantly had people coming up to me and talking about it) but it is very loud! Running with the valves closed would sometines get me by, but that's not a long term solution because eventually that could cause them to fatigue and break. I went back to stock mufflers for a weekend which promptly split open at the seam and melted my bumper. I'm using a Milltek resonated system, now, which is certainly far quieter. Not sure I can fully recommend it because I had pretty substantial fitment issues with both systems I was sent. One was unusable. I'd have the Top Gear back in my car tomorrow if I could.

    Hey Peter, why did you go back to the stock muffler setup vs. using the Top Gear valved exhaust?

    • @PeterSierraRacingSupply
      @PeterSierraRacingSupply Год назад

      California keeps getting more and more strict on sound. With catless headers and the Top Gear catback I kept getting flagged, some tracks I could pass valves closed, but that stresses the system and can damage it over time. Went back to stock for now just to remove the headache from my life, but then my stock mufflers busted open at the seam and melted my bumper haha. I'm testing a new, hopefully much quieter system that I may also add to the lineup alongside Top Gear if it goes well.

    • @PeterSierraRacingSupply

    • @PeterSierraRacingSupply
      @PeterSierraRacingSupply 8 месяцев назад

      @@chipattack912 I got the resonated MIlltek system in the car recently. Sounds pretty good, at least from the inside! Far more subdued than the Top Gear system + catless headers. Hopefully I can get out to the track in the next couple of months and get a video. Would be nice to get some footage outside the car, too. Quality-wise, the Top Gear is definitely nicer, with much better adjustment for fitment too. The Milltek was a real nightmare to get installed. Still not perfectly aligned, but good enough.

    I have a stock 987.2 S and it is plagued with alot of understeer on semi-highspeed corners (especially during consistant throttle input) what's ur solution to improve front end grip?

    • @PeterSierraRacingSupply
      @PeterSierraRacingSupply Год назад

      Yep that's a common issue for sure, especially stock. There's a lot that goes into it, but getting a proper track alignment is critical. Lower control arms are needed for the front to get enough camber (plus potentially a few other parts depending on what settings you want, exactly). Additionally, I highly recommend Tarett GT swaybars. Once you have good alignment settings they can be used to fine-tune your car's balance. I currently have mine set to full soft in the front, and one step from full hard in the rear. This allows the rear to rotate far more than stock. Lastly, learning how to trail brake effectively really maximizes corner speeds and laptimes. Inherently we have a lot more rear than front grip with the weight balance and wider tires at the back. When I get the trail braking right I can carry WAY more speed through the corner.

    • @BlitsBB
      @BlitsBB Год назад

      @@PeterSierraRacingSupply Thankyou for the insight. I have a rear 22mm rear sway bar incoming. Would installing just the rear sway bar ( and oem front) be enough to get the car rotating better? Cheers.

      Yep I think a double apex, or at least keeping it right near that second curb works well. Catalyst shows me that's the fasest way I've taken that corner thus far at least! Yeah 10W can be a brutal corner on tires I just keep it as wide as I can through there. You've got 7, 9, and 10 one after another which really work those front tires hard so it's not shocking to get some understeer there. These RT660's I'm running now are good for 2-3 laps at their peak grip so I'm not pushing hard much past that.

      The more I use it the more I like it. Not so much for the in-car coaching, I find that is hit or miss depending on how much data it has. Being able to pull the tablet out of the car and review each corner individually is huge though. No messing about with data or video from other sources, it's just quick and easy. I was working on improving my speed through a few corners at Thunderhill a couple weeks ago and it was very helpful. No way I'd have improved as much without it.

    Man, you carry so more pace around turn 3 (East) than I can in my stock 987.1 Boxster S. I'm lucky to maintain 50 mph before getting serious understeer. What tires are you running? Have you done work to the susepension?

      Yep it has a handful of mods! Stock you just can't get the camber needed into the front. Full mods list in the description but I have front LCA's which help a lot. -2.8*F camber at the moment. Tires are NT01s.

    Hey Peter, I saw in your site that you’re a dealer for both JRZ and Ohlins. What made you choose ohlins over JRZ?

    • @PeterSierraRacingSupply
      @PeterSierraRacingSupply 2 года назад

      Hi Spencer. A few things, mainly budget, streetability, and ease of use. The Ohlins are a better street coilover and are single adjustable. At the time I wanted simplicity and to still be able to use my car comfortably on the street. As my track time and car development has gone on, I've certainly wanted more performance-wise and will probably move to a higher end track coilover in the future. The Ohlins are very capable on track though and a huge upgrade from stock, so I really have no complaints for what they are.

      @@PeterSierraRacingSupply I see, yeah as much as I’d like an uncompromising setup, I do street the car. Maybe I’ll just wait until I have a beater to go in on that.

      @@PeterSierraRacingSupply another question - it seems like the topgear valved exhaust is basically like a soul valved exhaust, at a much better price. Is the street header also the same design as the soul street header, or is it a unique design? Looked different on the site

    • @PeterSierraRacingSupply
      @PeterSierraRacingSupply 2 года назад

      @@aisu8481 The Ohlins ride great on the street, better than stock IMO. The track performance and feel isn't even comparable to stock if you're really pushing it. You can totally do JRZ's and still street drive the car, but they're more expensive and definitely more of a compromise for a bit more performance. The longer I own the car the further I head down that road though. Aero coming next shortly. SOUL has many of their products manufactured in the same facility as Top Gear. For the ones that look identical, those were actually originally designed by Top Gear in the UK. It does look like SOUL has changed up their 987.1 headers slightly, but the flanges and such are the same, so looks like they're probably still manufactured in the same spot. There are typically some minor differences between the two companies products, like finish and other small things, but otherwise very similar.

      @@PeterSierraRacingSupply makes sense, I love the way the stock suspension on the spyder handles at low speeds, but it could use some more stability on high speed stuff. Anything with a small hill or lump makes it act out. No doubt I’ll upgrade at some point. Haha, it’s hard to keep from traveling that road! I guess the question is, skip to balls-out race spec, or enjoy the journey? Gotcha, I noticed soul has that fancy finish and the cool little soul badge on the valved system. It’s not an extra $1200-cool, though. Bear in mind mine is a .2. That was the one they seem to have longer tubes and a later join, for the catted system (in the pics). Do you have any footage of the topgear catted headers for .2 S?
